All command words need to be short and simple. One or two words are plenty. Don’t use complete sentences when giving commands or I just get lost in all the talking. You know, like when a parent talks to a teenager, they stop listening after the first several words. Using the correct tone of voice will also be very important for me to understand if it is a good thing or a bad thing that I have done.
FEEDING YOUR PUP I recommend you feed me in my crate so I learn to like my crate. Only use my crate as a positive thing, not a punishment.
Eukanuba LARGE BREED PUPPY dry dog food is what we are eating now. You will need to buy this at a pet or feed store. If you choose to get a different brand then you need to mix this food with the new food for a week or more so it doesn't upset my stomach. Slowly mix less of the older food in with the new food each time to slowly get my stomach used to the new food. Whatever brand you buy it MUST be Large Breed Puppy.
Make sure to mix one packet of FlortiFlora Probiotic into my food. The correct way to mix it is to take a gallon ziplock bag, fill it about 2/3rd full with my puppy food, take one packet of FortiFlora and sprinkle it into the bag and close it up. Shake the bag around to evenly coat my food with the powder from the little packet. Then feed me from that bag twice a day. To start off I will need 1 to 1 1/2 cups each time. Put the bowl my crate and close the door until I walk away from the food. Then I may need to go outside to poop.
Every week I will be growing bigger and bigger. So you will need to adjust how much food I get by looking at me before my next meal. If I have a big belly like a pregnant cow then you are feeding me too much, cut back 1/4 cup for the week. If my ribs are showing then add another 1/4 cup of food to each meal to find the correct belly size that I need to have.
My body will be growing very fast for the 1st year and the formula that large breed puppy food is made with will help to ensure that my bones will grow properly. You wouldn't want to spend all this money on me and take a short cut on the dog food and end up with improper growth of my bones that could affect my ability to be a Healthy Lab.
A BULLY STICK is a great chewing entertainer with a little flavor to keep my attention and not much odor for you. If at first I am not interested in it, try getting an adult dog (that you know well) to chew on it to bring out the flavor. One will last me a long time until my jaw gets stronger. Feed stores tend to sell these. Costco tends to have them in a bag of 20.
LIVER TREATS or any soft treats for training me. I love being rewarded; rather it’s a happy voice or food. But if I seem to be a little stubborn, then a tiny piece of soft treat before I have a full tummy will get my full attention. I will be much more interested in pleasing you in order to get that yummy treat from your hand. Remember tear small bits off because treats are rich and fattening and can upset by belly if I get too much at a time. My breeder buys them at Pet Stores such as Petco. Only use these for training so that I will be willing to do the tricks you are asking me to do. Like sit or stay.
WIRE CRATE with 2 doors works in any area and folds down to pack or store. This will be my den and a safe space for me and your home when I am alone and you are busy. Don't be afraid to put me in it when you can't watch me. Otherwise I may have lots of accidents in your home when I wake up or I may chew on things when you aren't watching me.
LEASH TRAINING As with any kind of training you do, if you use small liver treats I will be more eager to please you and move onto the next command. Labs are all about food.
